Rick Guttersohn, LMSW

Hi, I'm Rick. I founded Resilient Heart Therapy in 2024 because I wanted people to know there was a therapy center primarily focused on helping people navigate grief, depression, anxiety, and other issues after a major loss. Like many, my life has been impacted by loss, and I know how overwhelming grief can be. You don't have to navigate life's struggles alone.

Credentials & Approach

For years my personal mission has been to bring hope to those who are hurting. As a licensed social worker, my philosophy and approach blends clinical best practices along with a peer based approach to best meet the needs of those who are grieving or struggling to cope. I incorporate Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) with heightened focus on mindfulness, emotional awareness and emotional regulation. I also incorporate skills and strategies from Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to help clients cope more effectively. If requested, I am also able to incorporate Christianity and faith principles into treatment. In addition to grief and loss, my other areas of interest include shame/low self esteem, professional burnout, difficult life transitions, and ADHD.

Professional Experience

I have worked in several different roles that have shaped my philosophy and approach to grief work and mental health treatment. I have been a therapist in private practice for the past 5+ years. Prior to that, I served as an Executive Director of a peer-based bereavement nonprofit in Southeast Michigan. Over the past twelve years, I’ve been grateful to help guide people through grief by providing individual therapy, facilitating support groups, developing bereavement programs, consulting with organizations, and speaking at seminars, trainings, and events throughout Southeastern Michigan. I also enjoy partnering with local churches, normalizing therapy and utilizing therapeutic principles to help people in their faith journey. I received my MSW from Wayne State University with a concentration in social work leadership, and received my BSW from Spring Arbor University.

Therapist or Geek?

I must admit that I am kind of a geek! I've spoken at Motor City Comic Con on several occasions and enjoy incorporating movies and super hero characters into helping people with their mental health needs. I previously hosted a podcast called "Cinema Sessions" that dove into the mental health themes featured in popular movies.  I love using creativity and fun to make mental health topics more relatable and approachable. In my down time, I also love playing fantasy football and enjoy having my heart broken by the local Detroit sports teams.
